The second kanji is never random: it is picked because it looks like the first (早 and 草) or because it means something adjacent (南 and 西), since the mistakes learners actually make are confusions rather than blanks. All 2,230 JLPT kanji sit in small themed groups you can finish in a sitting, spaced repetition decides what comes back and when, and the kanji meanings themselves are translated into 20 languages, not just the buttons around them.
